When looking at the history of Jewish female comedians, [Brandeis Prof. Joyce] Antler says, "Its about departing from the standard feminine narrative." The focus of these comedians, especially someone like Joan Rivers, isn't about how pretty and desirable she is - in fact it's the opposite.
